Our topographic data is available for use in GIS applications, in the following scales which reflect their level of accuracy and best scale for use. The smaller the scale (i.e. 1:250 000 is a smaller scale than 1:100 000), the fewer features are depicted in the data and naturally they will be less spatially accurate. Geodata is vector data.

Table 1 provides links to the datasets and associated documents that should be read before using the data. National land use data is available for the 1992-93, 1993-94, 1996-97, 1998-99, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2005-06 and 2010-11 financial years.
GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 3 is a vector representation of the major topographic features appearing on the 1:250,000 scale NATMAPs supplied in Personal Geodatabase format and is designed for use in a range of commercial GIS software. Data is arranged within specific themes. All data is based on the GDA94 coordinate system. GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 3 is available as a free download product in Personal Geodatabase, ArcView Shapefile or MapInfo TAB file formats.
During 2014 state and territory nature conservation agencies provided information on their terrestrial and marine protected areas. This information was compiled into CAPAD 2014.
CAPAD 2014 figures include interim protected areas. These are land parcels purchased or identified to become protected areas with binding agreements and are now in the process of getting formal recognition as a protected area.

The Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data are derived from satellite data. The data provides an overview of the status and dynamics of vegetation across Australia, providing a measure of the amount of live green vegetation. The satellite data comes from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instruments on board the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) series of satellites that are operated by the US (http://noaasis.noaa.gov/NOAASIS/ml/avhrr.html).
