Input Dataset

Recreational Trails

Data layer includes trails which generally consist of a formed pathway on the ground surface. Portions of some long distance trails which coincide with vehicular tracks or constructed roads, or exist only as a natural ground surface are included. Dataset includes trails managed by both the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS). This dataset supersedes DEWNR Recreational Trail Routes and ORS Trails.

Dataset Purpose

Can be used as a general indication of these features within the State and to determine the location and type of trail that users can access for recreational purposes.

Dataset Lineage

This dataset was created to store complete recreation trails data, including the main trail, trail loops and spurs. Where loop trails coincide with the main trail the geometry has been duplicated to enable easy selection and mapping of these features. Portions of long distance trails which coincide with vehicular tracks or constructed roads are included; portions which exist only as a natural ground surface (do not consist of a formed pathway) are also included. Trails managed by both the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS) have been consolidated into this dataset. Data was sourced from existing datasets which may include GPS field data. Features were validated using existing trail or park maps, either hard copy or electronic via various web sites, and aerial imagery. Some features sourced from GPS data were edited to remove inconsistencies and excess vertices. Additional trails have been added within State Parks from field information.
