  Summary 

  The role of the Australian Electoral Commission is to deliver the franchise: that is, an Australian citizen's right to vote, as established by the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918. The AEC is responsible for conducting federal elections and referendums and maintaining the Commonwealth electoral roll.

  AEC Key Outcome: Maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services and targeted education and public awareness programs.

  Summary 

  The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including drought, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones.

  The Bureau’s Improving Water Information Programme is building a comprehensive and reliable picture of Australia’s water resources to support policy and
  planning. It collates, manages and publishes water information as part of its water information role and responsibilities under the Water Act 2007.

  The Geofabric is suitable for a wide range of water information applications. Streams can be traced upstream or downstream to identify drainage networks, catchment areas, and other features of interest such as monitoring points and water storages.

  These features are used by natural resource managers and the Bureau for water accounting, assessment, modelling and forecasting. The Geofabric provides a standardised authoritative information source that works seamlessly across Australia. It enables efficient and repeatable spatial hydrological capability for streamflow analysis and creation of contributing catchment areas. Using the Geofabric also removes the need to process digital elevation model data.

• Show Emergency Management Australia

  Summary 

  The Crisis Coordination Centre (EMA) is responsible for providing whole-of-government situational awareness to inform national decision-making during a crisis. The centre:

  • Centralises and coordinates information across the Australian Government, states and territories during a crisis in Australia
  • Coordinates Australian Government physical and financial assistance for disaster relief - it is responsible for managing national disaster recovery payments and ensuring states and territory governments, individuals, businesses and primary producers impacted by disasters are well supported through the Commonwealths relief and recovery programs
  • Supports the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade during major emergencies and events overseas
  • Maintains Australian Government response plans and arrangements for responding to domestic and international incidents

  Baseline data - geographic datasets to support situational awareness and analysis for response and recovery.

  • NEXIS data - for an EMA Exposure Report Product – This is a profile of what is in the footprint of an event (footprint could be hazard or LGA) which calls upon useful "baseline data" as social and economic indicators. This product would be fed into EMA's "National Impact Assessment Model (NIAM)" that needs baseline data to make an assessment of an event’s severity.
  • "Footprints" of a disaster event (observed for flood and bushfire or modelled if observed isn't available) - from states/territories or satellite, or modelled. This would be used to refine the application of the NIAM (benefits in constraining assistance to area impacted than LGA impacted).
  • They need to make an impact and damage assessment for NDRRA – to estimate the impact of an event’s overall initial cost and then assess the level of govt financial assistance (based on infrastructure damage and community impact, or benchmark cost)
  • To know that mitigation efforts and spending are infact reducing the recovery costs (narrow the nexus between mitigation and recovery). Need to determine the cost benefit analysis of mitigation measures and hotspots for mitigation efforts.
• Show The National Exposure Information System (NEXIS)

  Summary 

  The National Exposure Information System is a unique capability developed by Geoscience Australia to estimate the number, cost and characteristics of the people, buildings and infrastructure potentially impacted by a man-made or natural event.

  NEXIS services a number of clients including the insurance sector. This benefit is focusing on the Crisis Coordination Centre.

  Since 2012, GA has been providing spatial support and advice to the Crisis Coordination Centre (CCC) within Emergency Management Australia (EMA) as part of our collaboration with the Attorney-General’s Department.

  A key information requirement identified by EMA was the need to quickly understand what is in an event area. To address this requirement GA designed the Exposure Report which greatly simplifies the interpretation of exposure information for timely emergency response and recovery decision-making.

  The Exposure Report is generated by extracting the relevant attributes from NEXIS such as population and building estimates, agricultural commodities and building costs, and infrastructure counts in the potentially threatened area. This automated process quickly presents the required information in a clear and easily accessible report detailing estimates of what exists in the event area.

  By improving the timeliness and accuracy of information used by the CCC, GA has enhanced the government’s ability to respond to disaster and activate appropriate financial assistance for recovery.

  Precise positioning technology offers an exciting opportunity for all Australians. The ability to identify a location anywhere in Australia with a real-time accuracy of three centimetres enables a range of activities to be conducted more efficiently, from growing crops to constructing roads and navigating transport networks. The industries that have been early adopters have already realised the benefits of their investment — economically, environmentally and socially.

  Widespread access to precise positioning technology is estimated to boost the national economy by between $7.8 and $13.72 billion1 by 2020. Geoscience Australia is playing an important role in fostering the uptake and ongoing development of this technology through the National Positioning Infrastructure Capability.

  This program will establish the necessary infrastructure on the ground that provides the foundation for the technology.

  The National Positioning Infrastructure Capability will ensure all Australians have an opportunity to access continuous, reliable and precise positioning information.

  The mining industry has been an early adopter in the use of precise positioning technology. Positioning plays a role in all activities along the production chain, from site surveying to extracting deposits, boosting the industry's productivity and profitability along the way.

  Precise positioning technology allows drilling equipment to extract resources in exact locations in accordance with mine plans and identified mineral deposits. It also allows mining operators to safely identify the location of trucks at any point in time, what they are carrying and where it is being deposited.

  Summary 

  The Land Account is part of suite of environmental-economic accounts being produced by the ABS under the United Nations (UN) System of Environment-Economic Accounts (SEEA) framework. Land accounting measures the change in the land and its attributes resulting from the impact of human and natural activity. The value of a set of land accounts is the ability to measure land attributes by examining stocks at different points in time to support policy around sustainable economic and environmental management. The ABS current strategy includes the development of State/Territory or jurisdictional Land Accounts generally guided by the availability of data.

  • Land statistics are included in the Essential Statistical Assets for Australia, 2015. This includes statistical information regarding land use, and management practices, as well as land accounting. Land quality indicators are also included; • ABS Land Accounts provide an internationally agreed statistical summary of change in land use and cover using datasets included in the FSDF Land Cover and Use theme; • Land Accounts will provide a foundation for the development of Experiential Ecosystem Accounts. The ABS are currently developing an account for the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region. and • Department of Environment and Energy will likely to be using Environmental Accounts for the next State of Environment report
